I. Literary Term
a) Verbal Irony: is when what is said is opposite to literal meaning.
Example: "The pure in heart need no lawyers" (miller 1297)
b) There are many verbal and dramatic irony in Act 3 and this quote is one of them. It takes place when John Proctor, Giles and Mary Warren went see the Judge to tell the truth about the girls. Hale wants them to have a lawyer to support themselves with experienced person and that is when Judge Danforth says the pure in heart needs to lawyers. Maybe he was trying to say proctor was lying.
II. Quotation Elation
a) "I- I have no Power!" (miller 1313)
b) This quote is said by Mary warren when the girls were accusing her of sending spirits on them. I think Mary thought that if she said bad things about Abigail she will be the one in trouble and may receive punishments. Therefore to save herself, she changed the side and left Proctor hanging. I knew this was going to happen. By the quote I knew Mary would betray John Proctor.
III. Characters
a) Elizabeth: Innocent, Scared, Mother
b) Purpose: She was a important part of the play because if she the reason why Abigail started the whole witchcraft thing. Abigail wanted John Proctor to be the love of her life but she couldn't get it back as long as Elizabeth was around. So she accused innocent Elizabeth and she is the reason why Proctor was fighting against the court to save his wife. Instead, Proctor and Elizabeth will both end up dying.
c) Outcome: After she gives birth to her child she will be hanged like the rest of the people.
